Ismayil Ismayilov Fuzzy-Sets-based multidisciplinary method for assessing the truthfulnesses of ethnonyms’ etymologies through non-linguistic factors |

Abstract. Linguistics alone may not provide the reliable etymologization of ethnonyms (names of clans, tribes and nations). A comprehensive understanding ethnonyms’ etymology requires a multidisciplinary approach. Non-linguistic factors can include any information from history, geography, epigraphy, archeology, literature, ethnography, sociology, psychology and other sciences confirming or, conversely, disproving the hypothetical etymology of ethnonyms. Although there is existed a method for a multidisciplinary assessment of the degree of truth of hypothetical etymologies of ethnonyms but this method is not yet formalized. The goal of this study is to formalize the method based on Fuzzy-Sets and the multidisciplinary approach for assessment of ethnonyms’ etymologies, which has been named as “CNLF-DNLF” method (from CNLF – ‘Confirming Non-Linguistic Facts’ and DNLF – ‘Disproving Non-Linguistic Facts’). CNLF-DNLF method suggested is very suitable for taking into account non-linguistic information to confirm or disprove hypothetical etymology for the ethnonyms. The pseudocode of the CNLF-DNLF method’s algorithm is presented in paper. This method with its algorithm was developed as one of the components of software ‘Oghuz Ethnonyms ES’. The application of the CNLF-DNLF method is illustrated on the example of the assessing of etymology for one sample ethnonym from the 22 Oghuz ethnonyms of the M. Kashgari’s list. This sample application demonstrated the strong workability of the proposed method. The CNLF-DNLF method may be highly recommended to linguists and scholars from other domains that interested in assessing of etymologies of words based on Artificial Intelligence. |
